25 January - 12 February 2017
Cochin - The Malabar Coast – Alleppy – Kumily and the Western Ghats - Madurai - Tirunelveli - Cheranmahadevi – SCAD and Village Projects – Varkala Beach
Join our winter tour in the warm climate of South India. This is an exciting opportunity to travel with a group of like-minded people, enjoying the beauty of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. We go well off the beaten track. Meeting Indian folk in their villages, we explore their ancient culture and begin to understand their modern-day issues...
There are two parts: Part one begins in the historic port city of Cochin on the west coast of Kerala. We then take a tranquil backwater trip on a barge, cruising past rice fields and villages. We drive on to Kumily, visiting tea and spice plantations, and trek in the jungle-covered Cardamom Hills. Travelling over the Western Ghats and into Tamil Nadu, we visit the Meenakshi Temple and Ghandi Museum at Madurai. Part two begins with a train journey to Tirunelveli in south east Tamil Nadu where we stay as guests of SCAD, Social Change and Development. SCAD is a remarkable Indian NGO with a wing that supports the low caste, disadvantaged and poorest of the poor in approximately 500 villages. We spend time visiting SCAD’s many projects and taking in some of the local places of interest. Returning west, we complete our tour with a day to relax at Kerala’s Varkala Beach.
